New Version of RedSn0w Jailbreaks iOS 4.2.1, Installs Custom Bundles

The iPhone Dev-Team has released a new version of redsn0w that can jailbreak iOS 4.2.1 and install custom bundles independent of Cydia. Please note that this version of Redsn0w is meant for developers only and does not install the new version of Cydia. It is also tethered for newer devices.

-----
We’ve made some updates to redsn0w to make it easier for jailbreak developers (and tinkerers) to get their programs ready for 4.2.1. As noted above, the public version of Cydia (and MobileSubstrate too!) is not 4.2.1-compatible. redsn0w will now let you install your own custom bundles independent of Cydia (the bundle can actually be Cydia if you’ve compiled it on your own). These bundles can be up to 15MB in size, and should be in the form of a gzip-compressed tar file.

The new redsn0w 0.9.6b3 is available at:
OS X
Windows

It’s very important that you get the file permissions and ownerships right in your custom redsn0w bundles. To give you a practical example of such a bundle, here’s one that includes OpenSSH, OpenSSL, and the basic apt installer programs:

SSH bundle

redsn0w has also been updated to recognize the 4.2.1GM IPSWs. *However*, as noted above, the 4.2.x jailbreak is not yet untethered for most devices! That means until someone like @comex comes up with a way to untether it, you must use redsn0w (or a similar utility) to boot your device into a jailbroken 4.2.1 state. (The only exceptions to this are the iPhone3G, non-MC iPod touch 2G, and old-bootrom iPhone3GS. redsn0w will jailbreak those untethered!)

With the above redsn0w and SSH bundle, jailbreak developers and tinkerers can jailbreak and SSH into their 4.2.1 devices, provided they’ve done a tethered boot (using redsn0w’s “Just boot tethered right now” option).

Note: The Cydia that’s included in 0.9.6b3 is the same one as in 0.9.6b2, and so it will *not* work on 4.2.1. Don’t try installing it on 4.2.1! Instead, use the SSH bundle, or compile Cydia on your own. If you’re familiar with the apt utilities, you can use “apt-get” to install many programs from the command line. Be sure to do “apt-get update” first to refresh your sources!

News Corp to Release 'Daily' iPad Publication With Help From Apple

Ruport Murdock, head of News Corp, and Steve Jobs are planning to unveil a new digital newspaper called the Daily at the end of the month, according to the Guardian.

The collaboration, which has been secretly under development in New York for several months, promises to be the world's first "newspaper" designed exclusively for new tablet-style computers such as Apple's iPad, with a launch planned for early next year.

Intended to combine "a tabloid sensibility with a broadsheet intelligence", the publication represents Murdoch's determination to push the newspaper business beyond the realm of print.

The Daily won't have a print or web edition and has been developed with assistance from Apple engineers. The central innovation is said to be the ability to dispatch the publication automatically to an iPad..

The primarily US focused Daily will cost 99 cents (62p) a week.

Amazingly Detailed Steve Jobs Action Figure

M.I.C Store has just started carrying an amazingly detailed Steve Jobs action figure. Perhaps it would make a good Christmas present for that Apple fanboy on your list.

It is love at first sight. This Steve Jobs action figure is just awesome. It’s pretty interesting to see that it has a tiny body and a big head. When I take an in-depth look on the figure, seriously, the level of detail in this thing is simply amazing. Looking at his face, beard, jeans and sneakers makes me feel that it is a tiny size of Steve Jobs standing on my desk. It’s a little bit creepy, but it still looks cool. I just can’t wait to invite my friends to my house to take a look at this.

Shipping worldwide will take 3-4 weeks and is included in the $79.90 price tag.

Router Lets You Create a Wi-Fi Hotspot With Your Tethered iPhone

3Gstore.com and NexAira have announced the Nexaira Business Class 2 (BC2) 3G/4G Router that supports iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G tethering. Plug your iPhone into the Nexaira BC2 Router and you can instantly create a secure WIFi hotspot using the 3G connection from your phone. As an added bonus, the Nexaira BC2 Router will charge your iPhone while it is plugged in.

--
Unlike other iPhone tethering solutions, this method does not require you to jailbreak your iPhone, which can void your warranty. Simply add the appropriate data plan from AT&T's web site or the free MyWireless App and enable tethering on your iPhone (adds $20/month to your bill; can be disabled when you don't need it). Once tethering is enabled, connect your iOS 4 iPhone 3G, 3GS or iPhone 4 to the Nexaira BC2 Router via your iPhone USB cable and within a few seconds, your iPhone will indicate that it is in "Internet Tethering" mode. The BC2 router then serves as a WiFi hotspot that multiple WiFi-capable devices like the iPod Touch, iPad, laptop, and more can use to connect to the internet; ethernet devices can also connect via the router's LAN port. While using your iPhone as a modem, you can continue to make and receive calls as well as access all the applications that are installed on your iPhone, including send/receive email/text messaging or any other internet app.

"We are excited to partner with NexAira and offer this exclusive feature for our customers", said Michael Ginsberg, President of 3Gstore.com. "Customers have been asking for this feature ever since tethering was officially supported by Apple last year."
--

You can purchase the router for $189.99 from this link...

Nordic Countries Could Get the iPad Soon

Apple could be launching the iPad in the Nordic countries soon, according to information from telecom operators, the WSJ reports.

Tre, TeliaSonera, Tele2,and Telenor all said Friday that they will offer data subscription packages exclusively for the iPad, giving iPad users internet connectivity through their respective networks.

Bengt Olsson, head of communications at TeliaSonera, told Dow Jones Newswires that they will not sell the iPad and only offer subscriptions.

"As things look right now, we will only offer subscription packages for the iPad," he said. "The iPad launch is imminent and we plan to release our subscription offer in Sweden, Norway, Finland and Demark simultaneously," he said.

Steve Jobs Says He Won't Match TJ Maxx's $399 iPad Price

Unsurprisingly, Steve Jobs says he won't match TJ Maxx's $399 price for the iPad. He also reiterated that TJ Maxx is not an authorized reseller.

-----
Hey Steve,

If I walk into an Apple Store and ask for you to match TJ Maxx's price, would you do it?

Is TJ Maxx even an authorized reseller?
-----

Nope. And nope.

Evidence Found Suggests Apple May Offer Certain MobileMe Services Free

Apple may be planning to offer certain MobileMe services free to users, according to a discovery made by MacRumors.

New evidence uncovered in recent iOS 4.2 builds and the iOS 4.2.1 golden master seed is suggesting, however, that Apple will be offering a free MobileMe tier to users. The evidence comes in the form of a new private framework known as AppleAccounts.framework that includes a series of device-specific error messages referring to free MobileMe accounts. In particular, the error messages include alerts regarding having reached "the maximum number of free accounts" for a given device and certain devices not being "qualified for free MobileMe service".

MacRumors also found an error message that restricts certain Apple IDs from being used with MobileMe email.

"This Apple ID cannot be used for MobileMe Mail, but you can use it for other MobileMe services."

It's thought that Apple may be planning to use your Apple ID to offer over-the-air syncing. We'll keep you up to date with more information as it becomes available.

Add a Brightness Slider to Your Multitasking Menu

App Switcher Brightness adds a brightness slider to your multitasking menu alongside the iPod widget controls. Unfortunately, it does conflict with App Switcher Volume.

App Switcher Brightness is only compatible with iOS 4 and is available to download for $.99 from the Cydia Store.
