AutoCAD Returns to the Mac in October

Autodesk is bringing AutoCAD back to the Mac after a 16 year absence along with a free viewer application for iOS devices, according to a Financial Times report.

Autodesk’s $4,000 AutoCAD has been available only on computers running Microsoft’s Windows since the mid-1990s. However, fans of Apple’s Mac had to install Windows and other software first before they could use AutoCAD. Autodesk’s move comes as Apple is making headway with sales inside corporations with both the Mac and iPad.

Amar Hanspal, Autodesk senior vice-president, said the company will also introduce a free viewer application for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch that will allow users to preview designs and make minor changes.

The full version AutoCAD will ship by the end of October and will be the same price as the Windows version.

You can see some leaked images we posted back in May here.

Apple to Double iTunes Song Preview Length?

Apple may at least double length of time users have to preview music tracks on iTunes, according to a CNET source.

Currently, iTunes offers 30-second snippets of songs, a feature designed to give users a taste of the music to help them decide whether they like it enough to buy. Some users have long complained that half a minute isn't enough time to really hear a song.

CNET also notes that it's unlikely that Apple will reveal iTunes Cloud services on Wednesday, given that they have not acquired permission from the labels to do so.

Auto3G Extends Your iPhone Battery Life By Switching 3G Off During Standby

Auto3G extends your battery life by automatically turning off the 3G radio (leaving on the 2G radio) when you lock your iPhone and automatically turning on the 3G radio when you unlock your iPhone. This way you always have the speed of 3G when you need it without the battery loss.

As explained by Apple, this results in up to 100% greater battery life: "7 hours of talk time on 3G, 14 hours of talk time on 2G." (apple.com/batteries/iphone.html)

Auto3G can be purchased from the Cydia Store for $5.99

"At the time there were no color creation applications for the iPhone," said Rick Maddy, founder of Colorado based Maddysoft. "Since I had just completed my first two iPhone applications, I thought it would be cool to write an iPhone app to help pick colors and be able to view technical details about the color. After some time brainstorming ideas for features I began writing the app. What started as a quick need for some website colors turned into a several hundred hour project resulting in the release of Palettes. Since its initial release I've added many features, largely based on customer requests and feedback."

Pricing and Availability:
Palettes 3.0 is available worldwide exclusively through the App Store in the Productivity category. Palettes runs at one of three levels: Free, Basic, and Pro. The initial free version runs at the Pro level for a limited time allowing users to fully test the application. It will then revert back to the Free level. Users may upgrade to the Basic version for $3.00 (USD), $6.00 to upgrade to the Pro version and only $3.00 to upgrade from Basic to Pro. Review copies are available upon request.

Intel Announces Acquisition of Infineon for $1.4 Billion

Infineon and Intel have entered into a definitive agreement to transfer Infineon’s Wireless Solutions (WLS) business to Intel in a cash transaction valued at approximately $1.4 billion. Infineon provides the baseband for current and past iPhones.

WLS, a leading provider of cellular platforms to top tier global phone makers, will operate as a standalone business serving its existing customers. WLS will also contribute to Intel’s strategy to make connected computing ubiquitous from smartphones to laptops to embedded computing.

"The global demand for wireless solutions continues to grow at an extraordinary rate," said Paul Otellini, Intel president and CEO. "The acquisition of Infineon's WLS business strengthens the second pillar of our computing strategy -- Internet connectivity -- and enables us to offer a portfolio of products that covers the full range of wireless options from Wi-Fi and 3G to WiMAX and LTE. As more devices compute and connect to the Internet, we are committed to positioning Intel to take advantage of the growth potential in every computing segment, from laptops to handhelds and beyond."

"The sale of WLS is a strategic decision to enhance Infineon's value. We can now fully concentrate our resources towards strong growth in our core segments Automotive (ATV), Industrial & Multimarket (IMM) and Chip Card & Security (CCS). This creates a great perspective for all Infineon customers, employees and shareholders," said Peter Bauer, CEO of Infineon Technologies AG. "We all stand to benefit enormously from this deal. Thanks to the outstanding effort of the employees and the management during the last years, WLS is excellently positioned to grow further with the new owner who is ideally suited for this business."

The board of directors of Intel and the supervisory board and the management board of Infineon have approved the transaction. It is expected to close in the first quarter of 2011, subject to certain regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions specified in the definitive agreement.

Stunning Photos Produced By the iPhone 4's Rolling Shutter

These photos taken of airplane propellers with the iPhone illustrate the stunning results produced by the Rolling Shutter Effect.

Pictures like the ones below by Jason Mullins and Soren Ragsdale are due to the iPhone's method of image acquisition.

An iPhone's CMOS camera has no shutter, and reads the pixel values off in rows rather than all at once. In this photo the propeller spins about 5 times while the photo is taken, producing a strange effect.

Ragsdale posts this note from the photographer: "We take a lot of aviation type pictures during our normal day, from crappy workmanship we find in planes to cool flying shoots. This prop shot was way different that any other prop we have shot. If you watch the prop through the camera the blades spun down and came off the prop at the 6 oclock postion, then looked like they bounced off the ramp and reattached at 9 oclock. Very weird, Hope next week we can recreate with a better camera and some video. Aircraft was a Yak TD with a M-14 engine idleing at 1000 RPM, Yes we had someone in the seat and brakes were set. Should of had chocks too. As for Photo shop, if I had those skills I would not be working on communist iron."

Resupported4 Enables iPhone Video Out With Unsupported Cables

Resupported4 enables video out with third party cables and accessories and adds video playback support to many applications like Hulu, IMDB, and VEVO

While no guarantees are made towards supporting a particular cable, as a general rule:
● Does it plug into the dock connector?
● Will audio play through it when connected to your device?
● Does it have a video output or a screen?

Important notes
● Cable detection only works if audio is normally able to go out your dock cable.
● Resupported4 will not (by itself) mirror your applications on a TV. You will need DisplayOut to show your device's screen on a TV.
● Accessory warning messages may disappear.
● Resupported4 will NOT enable charging with cords that do not already charge your device. That is a hardware, not a software limitation.

You can purchase Resupported4 from the Cydia Store for $3.99.

Synchronicity Lets You Use Your iPhone While It Syncs With iTunes

Synchronicity is a new application that lets you use your iPhone or iPod touch while it sync with iTunes.

Synchronicity gives you the option to use your device during an iTunes sync. Instead of being stuck at the lock screen while you transfer new content, you can unlock, run apps, make calls, etc. You can do whatever you want, except run the Music app, which is disabled during syncs to prevent data corruption.

Synchronicity works on any device with firmware 4.0 or 4.0.1 and can be purchased from the Cydia Store for $2.

*thanks iclarified*

This is a great app and all but I would rather have a clock telling me how much time until my sync is done, a loading bar just doesn't do it for me..
