Apple Orders Millions of Qualcomm CDMA Chipsets for Verizon iPhone?

Apple has submitted orders for millions of units of Qualcomm CDMA chipsets for a Verizon iPhone, according to a TechCrunch report.

Sources with knowledge of this entire situation have assured me that Apple has submitted orders for millions of units of Qualcomm CDMA chipsets for a Verizon iPhone run due in December. This production run would likely be for a January launch, and I’d bet the phone is nearly 100% consistent with the current iPhone 4 (with a fixed internal insulator on the antenna).

The Verizon iPhone rumor has been beaten to death but most analysts agree that Verizon will definitely get the device. It's predicting the date that seems to be the hard part.

I can’t say with 100% accuracy that an iPhone will hit Verizon store shelves in January, but all of the signals point that way, and it would give Verizon’s CEO some interesting things to talk about in his CES keynote (though he may have to refrain as CES comes before Apple’s typical January keynote). I may be proven wrong, but based on my history dealing with components and selling to Apple, a Verizon-compatible iPhone looks to be a done deal.

Dashboard for the iPad

PXL Creations has announced the release of DashPad (version 1.2), bringing even more functionality to the iPad user experience. Rated 4 out of 5 stars by MacDirectory and featured on MacWorld, the new and improved DashPad delivers eight handy widgets in one Dashboard-like app, which includes a clock, calendar, calculator, unit converter, sticky note, Google search, Yellow Pages search and weather widget.

With a newly designed user interface and improved security, DashPad not only looks slick, but also eliminates the pesky iPad limitation of running only one app at a time. Running in Mobile Safari exclusively on the iPad OS, DashPad brings multiple apps to your iPad without jailbreaking or Apple approval. There are no crazy menus or confusing layouts; it's clean and easy to use.

Q.) How many widgets does DashPad run?
A.) Eight, including:

* Clock
* Calendar
* Calculator
* Unit Converter
* Sticky Note
* Yellow Pages Search
* Google Search
* Weather

Q.) Can I add more widgets?
A.) You can't add widgets yourself, not yet at least. We're working on it.

Q.) What platform does DashBoard run on?
A.) Exclusively on the iPad OS.

Q.) How much does DashPad cost?
A.) DashPad costs $9.99.

Q.) How can I pay while still being secure?
A.) We use PayPal to process our transactions, which is safe and secure. We also never share your personal information.

Q.) How do I install DashPad after purchasing it?
A.) After purchasing DashPad, you will receive an email with a unique password and username in it. You then enter that password and username into the DashPad app (full instructions are in the email).

Q.) Is DashPad for me? How can I justify the cost?
A.) DashPad is for anyone that wants to run more than one small application all at a time. If you need to quickly check the time or weather in Buffalo, DashPad is for you. Apps are constantly added to DashPad to improve the user experience, so it's functionality grows over time.

Q.) How will I know if DashPad is updated? Do I have to pay again?
A.) DashPad updates automatically as new versions become available. Each update is FREE. You can check which version DashPad is running by looking at the top right hand corner in the DashPad App.

Mark Papermaster Leaves Apple After iPhone 4 Antenna Controversy

Mark Papermaster, Apple Senior VP of Hardware Engineering, has left the company in the wake of widely reported iPhone 4 antenna problems.

According to the New York Times it is not clear if he was ousted or left on his own accord.

Apple spokesman, Steve Dowling, confirmed the departure saying that Papermaster "is leaving the company and Bob Mansfield, senior vice president of Macintosh hardware engineering, is assuming his responsibilities."

Observant readers may have noticed that Papermaster was not present at the iPhone 4 press conference. DaringFireball's John Gruber says, "from what I’ve heard, it’s clear he was canned. Papermaster was a conspicuous absence at the Antennagate press conference. Inside Apple, he’s "the guy responsible for the antenna" — that’s a quote from a source back on July 23. (Another quote from the same source: "Apparently the antenna guys used to have a big chip on their shoulder. No more.")"

More Than a Handy Flashlight

Redbits has announced the release and immediate availability of SOS LED 1.0, a new app for iOS devices with flash LED. SOS LED is much more than a handy flashlight. It's a useful app to help deal with many everyday inconveniences or nuisances. SOS LED can emit SOS pulses of either light, sound or both. Discretely sends an email to designated recipients containing a pre-defined text and subject; optionally with the current GPS location and link to Google Maps. Calls a pre-defined phone number.

In settings the user can choose between three types of SOS pulses (slow, medium and fast) and three modes of operation: maximize the number of pulses, maximize the battery life or an adaptive mode that monitors the battery level and adjusts pulses to the residual battery life.

When in adaptive mode, the app is able to send SOS pulses for many hours. This app unique feature is that it sums SOS pulses and flashlight with emergency call and email into one handy app. In the upcoming 1.1 update, a second type of signal has been added for situations where the international SOS signal can't be used because it's reserved for severe distress conditions.

Supported Languages:
* US English and Italian

Pricing and Availability:
SOS LED 1.0 is only $0.99 USD (or equivalent amount in other currencies) and available worldwide exclusively through the App Store in the Utilities category.

SMEStorage Releases Mac Cloud Drive beta 4

SMEStorage has released the fourth beta of a Mac Cloud Drive which enables up to 10 commercial storage providers to be accessed directly from a virtual drive in Mac Leopard and Snow Leopard Operating Systems.

CEO Ian Osborne states, "We are really pleased to announce the fourth and most robust beta of our virtual cloud drive for the Mac. This drive enables users to access their cloud storage files directly from their shell or Mac file manager"

"We have completely re-written huge parts of the drive in this beta to deal with the nuances of Mac Finder. The result is a huge step forward in our goal of having a robust multi-cloud drive for the Mac OSX. The drive now supports the encryption features of our gateway which can overlay any cloud, as well as giving the ability to generate a URL directly from the desktop."

"The term 'Cloud Gateway' is now becoming a recognized term and we believe we are only at the very beginning of users accessing their data in the cloud directly from the desktop rather than storing data on disparate internal servers. Key to an organizations data strategy in the future will be 'Access Anywhere Anytime'".

"Supporting the Mac is a key part of our strategy to enable a robust cloud-to-desktop- environment on WIndows, Mac and Linux and having a client that works on iPhone, Android and BlackBerry".

"The next beta will continue the hardening of the offering and will incorporate sync-to-desktop above all the clouds we support"

Become An All-Knowing Tea And Coffee Guru

Nigel Green has announced the release and immediate availability of Cuppa-Time Version 1.0 for iPhone and iPod touch. Cuppa-Time stores the personal preferences of people in regards to how they take their tea or coffee. This effectively means that it is no longer necessary to ask the same people over and over which beverage they prefer to drink and how they take it, doing away with those hastily written lists on scraps of paper.

Some examples of where Cuppa-Time can be used are at the office, family get-togethers, when unexpected guests drop in, events and functions, or any other gathering. In addition to being able to record their name and preferences, a "Special Request" option is included and is especially useful for when people have difficult to remember requests such as "Extra hot", "Half cold water", "Weak", "Strong" or "Add milk first". Preferences are chosen using a quick and easy step-driven selection process starting with whether the person wants tea or coffee. Each step is progressively made based on the previous selection until all the required information is gathered.

Cuppa-Time displays people's preferences on what is called the Master List, using easily recognisable images to represent these choices. Each person from the Master List can be selected individually to be added to a custom-made list called the Order. To quickly select or deselect large amounts of people, "Select All" and "Deselect All" buttons are provided. The Order is a read-only list containing the preferences of only those people selected from the Master List. At the bottom of the Order screen is the total number of tea's and coffee's required and also the total number of cups.

* iOS 4 multi-tasking is available for supported devices
* Special Requests can be entered in the Preferences screen and are shown along-side each person's name on the Master List and Order screen
* Easily identifiable images of how each person takes their tea or coffee
* A Reset Preferences button for starting over

Pricing and Availability:
Cuppa-Time 1.0 is $0.99 USD (or equivalent in other currencies) and is available worldwide exclusively on the App Store in the Productivity category. For more details please visit the Cuppa-Time Support Website. Members of the media may contact Nigel Green to obtain a free promotional code.
